Small parties demand repeal of the electoral code by Constitutional Court, Shehi: Open up the lists of candidates

Before the elections are called, the changes in the Albanian electoral code must first pass the test of the Constitutional Court.

Small parties seem to have tightened their ranks and collected signatures to challenge the agreement of the two major parties SP-PD in the Constitutional Court.
“This is the worst and most anti-democratic law. Albanian politics has been damaged by the 2008 agreement between DP and SP and this is a bad addition to that. I signed it yesterday, there are also some other fellow MPs like Alibeaj and others. Until Friday it will be submitted so we go to the end of this story”, says the senior MP Dashamir Shehi, chairman of LZHK.
The agreement between the Socialist Party and the Democratic Party foresees that 100 candidates names be chosen by the chairman, while only 40 will be elected by the citizens.
Shehi adds: “This is a definitive closure of the lists of candidates. The change we claim is this, for the Constitutional Court to call this agreement unconstitutional as it closes the door to parties that want open lists. DP and SP may close the list for themselves, but other parties have the right to open lists”.
For the electoral code, as party leader, Dashamir Shehi can directly set the Constitutional Court in motion without the need for deputies’ signatures.
