Wildfires in Gjirokastra, 36 firefighters and 50 army forces working to stop the flames
The fire on Mali i Gjere in Gjirokastër, in the southern tip of Albania, continues to remain problematic due to the height of the terrain, but compared to the morning hours, the situation is reported to have improved.
Firefighters have managed to bring two of the four burning hearths under control and have reduced the length of the fire belt, which previously stretched along 12 kilometers.
Currently, 36 firefighters and 50 army forces are working on the ground to put out the fires, while reinforcements with other officers are expected.
The situation seriously depends on the strength and direction of the wind. Another hearth of fire appeared in the morning near the village of Mashkullore in an area covered by vegetation.
Another team of firefighters and volunteers is working to put out the fire in this new hearth. Police are investigating to identify the perpetrators of at least 4 intentional arsons this week, according to authorities.
