The olive festival in Dushk of Lushnja marks the start of oil production by farmers
The olive festival has been celebrated for years in the village of Dushk in Lushnja in central Albania, where the farmers of the area gather together in the beginning of November with folk songs and dances, a time which coincides with the olive harvest and the start of oil production.
Those present at the fair exhibited various products, all prepared from the oil of their olive groves.
For them, the olive tree is considered the main source of food and financial income, so every year they try to increase the planted areas.
The residents of Dushku say that they increase the olive plantations by planting both on the hills and in the fields. Seeing the financial benefits, they have replaced old varieties with new olive trees, mainly for oil production. The climate of the area favors their growth, so olive groves have gained priority compared to other agricultural crops.
In Dushk, 400 hectares of land are currently planted with olives, which produce about 300 tons of oil, according to the growers.
