Greece “softens” stance on Albania, promises support in EU membership negotiations
11 months after the headlines of the Greek press about the first Greek “blockade” for Albania due to the issue of the minority mayor “Beleri”, Greek foreign ministër Georgios Gerapetritis said today that he considers the Conference Intergovernmental EU-Albania as a historical moment for the development of the European progress of the Western Balkans.
The Greek Foreign Minister states that Athens, which did not find any support in its warnings to Tirana from its European partners, maintained a constructive position on the issue despite the crisis that has existed in the last 18 months in the relations, after the arrest and the imprisonment of the elected mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, now a member of the European Parliament of the New Democracy in Greece.
“Our position is that the first set of chapters includes both the rights of minorities, including the Greek national minority, and their property rights. In particular, this position now constitutes a common position, already registered as such, by the 27 member countries of the European Union” – said Georgios Gerapetritis, Foreign Minister of Greece.
